Be Nice: Agni Zotis' Illuminating Journey from Shadow to Truth at Project 301

Writer: AGNI ZOTISAGNI ZOTIS

From March 26 to April 25 Be Nice, the latest solo exhibition by Agni Zotis, was on display at Project 301 in New York. This captivating collection of works is more than just an artistic showcase—it's an immersive exploration of light, shadow, existence, and transformation. Drawing inspiration from the Allegory of the Cave in Plato’s Republic, Zotis delves into the ways in which light and shadow shape our perceptions of reality, pushing us to step out of the darkness and into the light of truth.

Be Nice is a journey from illusion to truth, from the shadows of the cave into the brilliance of light. The exhibit mirrors the cycle of life and death, illustrating the continuous flow of creation and destruction that defines the human experience. Through her evocative use of color, texture, and multimedia techniques, Zotis captures the primordial essence of existence, the force of love that unites all life, and the inevitability of death. She explores how these elements intersect, reflecting the eternal dance between order and chaos, individuality and universal consciousness.

As Zotis describes it, there are underlying patterns that connect molecular structures, the natural world, and the vastness of outer space. These patterns reflect the microcosm and the macrocosm—an intricate relationship that mirrors our own lives and experiences. Whether in the small, intimate moments of human existence or in the grand scale of the cosmos, the same forces are at play, guiding us toward understanding and connection.

Agni Zotis is a multimedia artist who uses a wide range of techniques to explore the human condition. Known for her dynamic series of paintings, Zotis also incorporates performance, video art, and installation into her work. Her artistic background is rich and diverse, having studied studio art at Hunter College, anatomy at the Art Students League, and Byzantine iconography under a monk in Astoria, Queens. Her experience as a gallery director for AGNI Gallery in the East Village also exposed her to the avant-garde, influencing her unique perspective.

In addition to her art, Zotis is passionate about empowering youth through mindfulness and the arts. In 2013, she founded MAY Kids Transform, a program designed to help young people explore creativity while developing self-awareness. Her Greek heritage and New York upbringing also play a significant role in shaping her work, imbuing it with a deep sense of personal history and cultural influence.

Project 301 serves as a platform for creative collaborations, and Zotis' Be Nice fits perfectly within this vision, presenting new ideas that challenge and expand the boundaries of traditional art. The exhibit is a dynamic experience, both visually and conceptually, inviting viewers to reflect on their own lives, their place within the universe, and the ways in which light and darkness shape their understanding of truth.

One of the most striking features of Zotis' work is her ability to manipulate light. She equates light with knowledge, believing it has the power to alter perception and shape reality. Her use of light in the exhibition is particularly powerful, as the works transform depending on the light they are exposed to. Zotis applies bold pigments, metals, semi-precious stones, and phosphorescent materials, each chosen not only for their aesthetic appeal but for their energetic qualities. These materials interact with light in ways that shift, absorb, reflect, and refract, creating a dynamic visual experience that is constantly evolving.

Be Nice is a celebration of existence in all its forms—life, love, death, and the eternal cycle of creation and destruction. Agni Zotis invites us to step out of the shadows and into the light, to embrace the truth that lies beneath the surface, and to experience the world in all its vibrancy and complexity. Don't miss this chance to witness an exhibition that is as transformative as it is thought-provoking.
